Winners of international competitions

In 2016, György Soponyai won first prize in the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year in the "Polar Light" category with his photo “Twilight Aurora”.

Patrik Tarczi's photo of this rarely photographed object won second place in the 2016 international competition organized by ATIK-cameras.

The photo of László Francsics won first place in the robotic telescope category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year, for the first time in Hungary.

The iconic photo of flux nebulae by Iván Éder won third place in the “Deep space” category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

In 2014 the photo of Iván Éder’s Heart Nebula won first place in the deep sky category of the Central European ASA Astrophotography competition.

At the same time with the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year award, Iván Éder's photo also placed third in the Central European ASA Astrophotography competition.

The Hungarian astrophotographers could be happy, because in this year Lóránd Fényes's photo of the Antares region took second place in the same category of the Central European ASA Astrophotography competition.

After a year's absence András Papp became the next Hungarian winner at the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, now in a main category “Our Moon”.

In the same year, András Papp also placed second in the "Planets, Comets and Asteroids" category at the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.

It can be said that 2015 was the year of András Papp, as he also won first place in the deep sky category of the ASA Astrophotography competition with a photo of the Lagoon Nebula.

In 2017, László Francsics won the "Our Moon" category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition with his photo showing the special colors of the Moon.

András Papp took second place in the "Stars and Nebulae" category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year with his unique star trail image.

In 2018, Ferenc Szémár won the "Skyscapes" category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year international competition with his photo “Circumpolar”. 

In the same year László Francsics won third place in the "Our Moon" category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.

In 2019, László Francsics’s Into the Shadow was selected the astrophoto of the year by the jury of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, making him the first and so far only Hungarian to win the Astrophotographer of the Year title. 

László Francsics’s photo showing all the phases of the total lunar eclipse on January 21, 2019 - the same image also won the "Our Moon" category in the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year. 

In 2019, for the last time in the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, an award was presented in the robotic telescope category, which was won by László Francsics's photo depicting the planet Saturn in a special, near-infrared range.

With a photo of a currently heavily discussed topic, Rafael Schmall won the "People and Space" category of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year international competition. His photo shows the Starlink satellites that have a big impact on astronomy and astrophotography.

As the first Hungarian award-winning photo of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year, Lóránd Fényes won first prize with his photo "Elephant's Trunk with Ananas" in the "Sir Patrick Moore Prize for Best Newcomer" category.

Patrik Tarczi won the international competition organized by ATIK-cameras with his highly detailed photo of Messier 106.

Bence Tóth became the second Hungarian winner of the newcomer category (Sir Patrick Moore prize) of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year after 9 years. 

Balázs Benei won first place in the smartphone astrophotography category in the Capture the Cosmos international competition.

In 2020, György Soponyai won third place in the Solar System category of the Capture the Cosmos international competition.
